Colebrook Lane Project Posted July 19, 2024 by louise.pilkington7@gmail.com

For some years complaints have been received from users of Colebrook Lane – the foot/cycle path that runs from Morrisons vehicular entrance to the A385 at the back of the Fire Station. It is well used by folk heading for and returning from Leatside Surgery, the Industrial Estate, Borough Park and the Train Station. Complaints include its spooky atmosphere when the sun has gone down, noticeable rat infestation and the overgrown state of the ancient leat that is hidden amongst the trees. Additionally, it had been noticed that many of the trees running alongside the lane need significant maintenance.

As a result, a comprehensive Tree Condition Survey and Risk Assessment was undertaken by Devon Tree Services and – indeed – ash dieback has taken its toll and some essential tree felling is also required. A comprehensive survey has also been undertaken by Devon Wildlife Consultants to identify the impact that the work on the trees and undergrowth and overgrowth would have on wildlife and its habitation.

Following these essential consultations – and taking them onboard – the Totnes Trust is delighted to announce that, in conjunction with W M Morrisons Supermarkets Ltd, improvements to the lane and leat in front of Colebrook Cottages will commence on 6th October.

The first phase of the project will be carried out by local tree surgeons, Pittman Trees.

Their work will focus on removing dead trees, hazardous branches, and ash trees affected by dieback. Once this essential safety work is complete, they will then cut back and clear the undergrowth and overgrowth along the path. The lane will be closed for two or three days whilst the ‘dangerous’ work is undertaken and the alternative pavement along Coronation Road will have to be used. Separate arrangements are being made for the occupants of Colebrook Cottages.

Following this, the Totnes Trust plans to host a Community Volunteer Day, inviting local residents to help clear the leat area to improve its flow, remove litter, and give the path a final tidy. The final stage will involve planting along the leat-side to create a more attractive, and biodiverse environment for everyone to enjoy.

We look forward to updating you on the progress of the Colebrook Lane Improvement Project as it develops—and we hope to see many of you involved in helping to bring this space to life!
